Higher Education And Saus Reach Agreement On Nsfas Allowances

In a significant development, the South African Union of Students (SAUS) has successfully reached an agreement with the Higher Education authorities regarding the payment of student allowances by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

Protest Actions at Tshwane University of Technology

Last week, students at Tshwane University of Technology staged a blockade at the entrance of the Pretoria West Campus. The protest was primarily triggered by concerns related to the eZaga app, which is responsible for facilitating monthly allowances for students.

Key Agreement Points

As a result of the negotiations, SAUS National Spokesperson, Asive Dlanjwa, announced the resolution. The agreement encompasses several crucial aspects, including:

  1. Fees: The agreement ensures that fees will be maintained at R12.
  2. Timely Card Distribution: Within the next 72 hours, all students will receive their payment cards.
  3. Student Inclusion and Payments: It is expected that 90% of the students will have their payment cards and receive their allowances. By the time students return to university, the aim is for all students to be paid their allowances.

Conclusion

This agreement between SAUS and Higher Education authorities marks a significant milestone in addressing the concerns regarding the payment of student allowances through NSFAS. The resolution provides a framework for ensuring the timely disbursement of funds, keeping fees at an affordable level, and prioritizing the financial well-being of students across South Africa.
